Shopping for dining room tables isn't as easy as one would think. Style, size, color, functionality, and price all factor into choosing dining room tables. Eating in front of the TV on the couch can only last for so long before it gets old. Although it's supposed to be a table just for dining, most homes use dining room tables as a homework spot, catcher of mail, craft center, and dining area.

The fact that they are used for every purpose lends to the reason why dining room tables are available for every budget, style, need and use. Since there is such a vast array of choices, it's best to answer the money question first. There are so many choices available that an open budget might prove to be a hindrance. Less expensive materials, such as laminate, can be found in dining room tables starting at around $100, while more expensive materials, such as natural wood and wood composite will start at about $300-400 and up.  The retailer also makes a difference. While Ikea and Pier 1 are more budget conscience, starting at $100 at up, retailers such as Pottery Barn start at a higher rate because of their brand.

Once a budget is defined, size is probably the most important factor. Measuring the room is essential when shopping for dining room tables. Nothing is worse than muscling furniture into a room to realize that it does not fit, and subsequently having to muscle it back out of the room and return to the store. To be functional, the chairs that will be paired with the table must have enough space to be pulled out when in use.

Dining room tables come in different shapes, which should also be thought of when measuring for the room. Some tables fit better than others, so being creative with the shape is important. Round, square, and oval dining room tables are the most popular shapes.

A round dining room table can provide a more intimate dining experience. With everyone in clear view of everyone else, there won't be any scooting up or back with chairs to see people farther down the table. This shape fits well in just about any space and can usually fit the best in small spaces. The cross base bistro table, a round dining room table composed of a polished nickel-plated iron base and wood top, can be found at West Elm for $250. Ikea sells very economical and basic round dining tables beginning at $100, and Pier 1 offers a basic wood one for $300.

It's good to be square. Square dining room tables have seen a resurgence in the pub style table. These bar height tables usually seat four and can be found at any furniture store. Target's take on the pub table can hold snacks and drinks for less than $170. Square dining room tables of the standard height can be found at any furniture store. Ikea has a wood laminate square dining room table, dubbed Bjorkudden, for $70, West Elm's veneer version is $300, and Pier 1 has a coffee colored wood veneer table for $240.

Oval dining room tables are a little harder to find. Most oval dining room tables are actually round dining room tables with an extension in the middle. These dining room tables are outstanding for impromptu parties as well as saving space. Crate and Barrel's Kipling Pedestal Dining Table retails for $700 and can expand from it's circular shape into an oval shape. West Elm's X-base extension table, another round table gone oval, retails for $550 and the removable leaf stores under the table top.

A well thought shopping spree for dining room tables can bring families a little closer, and give a place for all of the major happenings of the household to commence. A dining room table is an excellent way to add a sense of style to a house. Now the only challenge is keeping it clutter-free so it can be used to eat on.
